Anaerobic digestion of Ulva sp 3. liquefaction juices extraction by pressing and a technico-economic budget ArchiMer
Morand, Berenice; Briand, X; Charlier, R.
In many countries, the algae of "green tides" are harvested in the fight against pollution. Ulva often represents the main component of the tide, and intensive research has been conducted on the possibility to use the algae as a methanisation substrate. However, methanisation is hampered by various practical obstacles, which requires a compromise between productivity and biological yield. The process described here calls upon a pre-digestion phase of Ulva which, besides the economy of time and volume of the digestion, makes it possible to obtain a biogas of good quality. The methanisation substrate is the hydrolysis juice collected by draining, followed by pressing. The cake resulting from the pressing process can be used as organic enriching or...

Effects of macroalgal accumulations on the variability in zoobenthos of high-energy macrotidal sandy beaches ArchiMer
Quillien, Nolwenn; Nordstrom, Marie C.; Gauthier, Olivier; Bonsdorff, Erik; Paulet, Yves-marie; Grall, Jacques.
Sandy beaches, forming the most widespread coastal habitat in the world, are threatened by the effects of increasing anthropogenic pressure in the context of global change, including the increased occurrence of green tides composed of free-living Ulva spp. Sandy beaches are also highly dynamic ecosystems that support numerous essential ecological functions and contain a distinctive biodiversity, but their precise functioning and natural variability (i.e. the disentangling of biological and physical influences) remain under-studied. Our study aimed at determining the effects of space, time, and environmental variables on the natural variability of macrofaunal community structure and at specifically determining the effects of macroalgal accumulations on the...

Etat de l'environnement sur la facade atlantique ArchiMer
Mauvais, Jean-louis; Goarnisson, Roger.
This document was drawn up by a working group and based upon forecasting considerations concerning the Atlantic seaboard. Within can be found a summary of different issues affecting the coastline : inputs, estuaries, green tides, spreading species, wetlands, state of biological resources, sand and gravel as well as hydrocarbon extraction, development consequences, coastline evolution, littoral landscapes, large-size debris. This report summarizes coastline monitoring as well : the marine national monitoring network, microbiological surveillance of beaches and zones of shellfish production, plytoplankton monitoring, shellfish growth. Lastly, this document discusses proposed actions for the improvement of water quality by the Water Agencies of...

Impacts of green tides on estuarine fish assemblages ArchiMer
Paumier, A.; Tatlian, T.; Reveillac, E.; Le Luherne, Emilie; Ballu, S.; Lepage, M.; Le Pape, Olivier.
All around the world, an increasing proportion of estuarine systems are facing massive proliferations of green macroalgae, called green tides, in response to nutrient enrichment. The consequences of this perturbation for ichthyofauna that use estuarine systems as essential fish habitats remain understudied. To estimate these consequences, we combined outputs of both macroalgae proliferation and fish community surveys conducted for the European Water Framework Directive in thirteen estuaries in northwestern France, a region where green tides are of great concern. The approach revealed the influence of green tides on estuarine fish communities. The response of each community to the green tides differed according to their functional guild composition. Benthic...

L'eutrophisation des eaux marines et saumâtres en Europe, en particulier en France ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Aminot, Alain; Belin, Catherine; Chapelle, Annie; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Joanny, Michel; Lefebvre, Alain; Merceron, Michel; Piriou, Jean-yves; Souchu, Philippe.
In order to be able to count the cases of coastal eutrophication and to propose methods to monitor as well as to reduce these phenomena, first of all it is necessary to precisely define the word eutrophication itself. Instead of the strict etymological definition, that is to say a progression of the enrichment of a medium, we will rather retain the concept of a state enriched at a point such as it causes harmful effects on the ecosystem, and nuisances to man's activities. Based on the average chemical equations of the organic matter synthesis/degradation in the sea, this operational definition thus puts forwards the harmful consequences of enrichment, i.e. the production of an excessive algal biomass, sometimes unbalanced from the point of view of...

L'utilisation de modèles écologiques dans la lutte contre l'eutrophisation des eaux côtières françaises ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain.
Increasing anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus loadings in some coastal areas have induced during the last twenty years excessive production of algal material, either phytoplanktonic or macrophytic. This so-called eutrophication phenomenon alters the usual structure of ecosystem and can lead to massive kills caused by anoxia in some extreme cases, when almost all the dissolved oxygen in bottom waters has been consumed by organic matter decomposition. Just behind the semi-enclosed lagoons, the most sensible areas are the dilution plumes of main rivers. In the case of French coasts, mediterranean lagoons have been eutrophicated for a long time, whereas the coastal areas of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel have been partially preserved by the strong...

Macroalgal population and sustainability ArchiMer
Morand, Philippe; Merceron, Michel.
Algal blooms, often associated with eutrophication, are common in temperate regions in coastal lagoons and estuarine areas as well as in open seas. However, because of recent changes in water flows and sediment and nutrient loads in most rivers, eutrophication phenomena are now occurring in areas previously non affected. One of its most widespread and easily recognized effects in a coastal marine ecosystem is the excessive growths and drifts of macroalgae, to such a degree that the biomass becomes a significant problem. The nutrients, notably from anthropogenic origin, constitute a significant factor in the appearance of the blooms in coastal waters. Besides a background originating from natural areas and precipitations, nutrients come from agriculture,...
